Ways to Help You Child at Home

Literacy - Reading, Writing and Spelling

Ensure your child reads a wide range of books, magazines and instructions for making or operating things.

Read aloud to your child.

Ask your child to retell a story or explain their favourite section.

Do crossword puzzles together and play word games.

When your child is learning a word:

- let them have-a-go at spelling the word

- then note all the letters which are correct

- then divide the word into the syllables

- help your child if letters are reversed

- provide encouragement

Encourage your child to write letters, notes or create cards.

Talk to your child to help them clarify their thinking about their writing.

Talk to your child about the type of writing they are doing at school.
